Exterior wall and roof materials

When considering exterior renovations, start by learning about the materials used to make your home's exterior walls and roof.
There are many different types of exterior walls and roofs, each with its own characteristics depending on the material.

Exterior Walls

【Metal siding board】

A metal copper plate made of steel, aluminum, etc. It is made of a surface material (metal plate) with excellent design and durability and a backing material with excellent insulation and fire resistance, and is lightweight and durable. It needs to be repainted every 10 to 15 years to maintain its beauty and prevent mold. If the paint film is damaged, it needs to be treated immediately.

【Ceramic siding board】

A material made from cement and fiber in a plate shape. It is available in a wide variety of designs, including tile and brick patterns, and is widely used these days. The base material is water absorbent, and the waterproofing function relies on the coating, so if the coating is allowed to deteriorate, it can cause serious damage to the structure of the building.

【mortar】

A material made by mixing cement, lime, and sand with water. It is easy to apply and inexpensive, so it was the most popular spray-on finishing material for new construction. It is strong and has excellent fire resistance, but when its waterproofing function decreases, it deteriorates rapidly and cracks appear.

【ALC】

A lightweight aerated concrete exterior wall material. It has excellent insulation, fire resistance, and durability, and is often seen in apartment buildings. If the paint is left to deteriorate, it will fall apart from the inside because it has poor waterproofing. If it is too late, it will be necessary to restore it by repairing the base, so it is important to repaint it as soon as possible.

【Concrete wall】

Concrete, a mixture of water, cement, sand, and gravel, is the strongest exterior wall material. However, over time, the waterproofing effect deteriorates and water will seep into the concrete, requiring professional repairs.

【Galvanized iron cladding】

The galvanized iron used for exterior walls is often painted with a wood grain finish known as "printing," and is often used in buildings that are over 30 years old. As it is made of metal, it is characterized by its excellent waterproofing and durability. It is rarely used for exterior walls these days.

Roof

【Slate (color vest)】

This is one of the most common roof types, and is made of thin stone boards. As it deteriorates, cracks and warping of the surface, corrosion of the base material at the joints of the roof surface, and loosening of the nails that hold the metal sheets in place will occur. After 10 years or more, dirt and moss will appear, and fading will become noticeable, so it is a good idea to have it inspected for corrosion inside.

【Slate (color vest)】

Among tiles, there are cement tiles, Monier tiles, concrete tiles, etc. Compared to slate tiles, they deteriorate more slowly, but still require regular maintenance. The treatment method and paint used vary depending on the type, so it is important to perform maintenance according to the material.
